I take it the wire grill on the loco windows is to protect against vandals

The grilles were intended to protect the windshields from flying or suspended objects of any sort- bricks, rocks, concrete blocks, shopping carts, etc. They saved replacing a cracked or shattered windshield, which was a costly proposition; about $600 each, maybe 20 years ago...
