New Haven's last FA-1s, frequently run on such trains as BL-1/LB-2, ( Boston -Lowell, MA ), accessed South Boston via the Dorchester freight line. By the late sixties, the combination of neighborhoods and overpasses encountered on that route, provided ample reason to protect crews from "low flying" shopping carts.

After being retired by PC, NH 0401 was rebuilt at GE to become Long Island RR Cab-Control car # 618 retaining its 244 prime mover to generate Head End Power for lighting & HVAC, not to mention providing the crew with a "safe" location when trains were operated in "push" mode.
