At this point in time, the "Blue Ridge" was essentially a "First Class", limited-stops commuter train for those sufficiently well-heeled to live in Washington's far western suburbs ( which then as now extend into the easternmost portions of West Virginia) and who didn't have to be at their offices before 9 am. While many people believed at the time that this service ( which ran only 2 hrs end to end) should not have been an Amtrak operation, it did provide a well-patronized service that provided MARC the time needed time to enlarge and improve their own operations to the extent that the Blue Ridge was no longer needed.
