Nice mood shot, with the reflection in the wet roadway, the DDA40X in the lashup, and the vintage Chevy pickup.

Having worked in UP's East Yard a few years previously I can attest that what the hogs previously ate was as much a challenge as the hogs themselves!

I can remember reading about UP hauling hogs across country. I assume this service has long since went away. Does anybody know the status of this?

Livestock are rarely hauled by trains or trucks these days. Today, only their frozen carcasses are transported to market by trains & trucks. Transporting live animals was hard on the animals. They would arrive dehydrated and starved of food. Their "live weight" suffered & so did the selling price. Often livestock arrived as much as 10% lighter in weight. Long distance livestock trains would stop to water & feed, but the motion of the train along with the rock & rock, made food/water difficult to keep down. Which also added to the nasty smell of the livestock car.
