Looks to be an 1157 bulb from a boat trailer? I would have expected LED's. Any guess to the older technology on the newer equipment?

That's what it looks like to me also - would have thought LEDs would be used for longevity

Quartz Halogen? Is this the 1980's and SD-40's are the main locomotive? I would have also thought LED. Very nice Brandon. The image quality is first rate, not an easy thing to do.

Amazing the number of wires to light a bulb. There is one issue with LED's, they are not hot so they do not melt any snow, ice, frost of the signal light. All those upper wires maybe attached to a heater ? Surprising to see a rheostat to control the light.

I asked a signal maintainer why they don't use LEDs, he said that they cost a lot more than the incandescent lights bulbs but that Norfolk Southern does use them sometimes in their block signals... Thanks Dennis A. Livesey for the kind words.

Signal replacement is not required for PTC, just something railroads are choosing to do. The number of wires is due to the lamp housing acting as a conduit for those mounted above it.
