It always seemed to me that the E-60 would have been a better looking motor if they had used a larger rectangular side window, as it appeared GE had originally planned for rather than that tiny "slanted-mailslot." But then, this was still the era of "ghetto-grills" on cab windshields and heightened concern about crew protection.

The grilles certainly didn't do anything for aesthetics, but I guess they were necessary in the 1970s. A guy at the Wilmington Shops told me that the newer electrics have ~2" thick windshield glass, which eliminated the need for the grilles. The small side window is a mystery; I don't know how useful it might have been.
