That was probably the best paint job that could be done with a budget of $3.98.

Sid, I have to DISAGREE. The D&H did a very careful job of neatly re-lettering / re-numbering their newly acquired power during this period when compared to the "glob & stencil" job Conrail did on most of their non-PC power. In reality, it probably all came down to the sense of pride & craftsmanship felt by the workers in the particular shop that did the painting. In contrast, those done in former EL and Reading shops were VERY neatly done, being reflective of how those roads maintained their own power.
