Why is the station there ?

fascinating pic of the engineering marvel. But why is there a "station" in the middle of this huge tunnel?

There are two "stations" in this 57 kilometer long tunnel, Faido and Sedrun. Only here the trains could change from one tube to the other via a lane change, when some part of the tunnel is closed for maintenance. In the case of an emergency, a train stops here and the passengers and staff can walk to the other tunnel tube for evacuation by another train.
