What a handsome engine!

I think you got it backwards. The 5300s became 4300s (or 4400s) after rebuilding this this one went back, I'm assuming, to its original number. Great shot. My favorite SP typle.

Beautiful! Brings back memories from my childhood-watching SD-9s on the tracks between Corvallis and Arlie(sp?) Junction in the late seventies. Love that Black Widow scheme!

Sid, Yes, my caption is a bit confusing. The locomotive was built as SP 5399, and renumbered 4364 when rebuilt into a SD9E. Then the locomotive got its original number back, probably when it was painted into black widow colors by LLW. I don’t want to even get into the 1965 SP system-wide renumbering which put the SD9s into the 3800 (and up) series. That would make it even more confusing! I’ll correct the caption to read a bit better… Thanks for the heads up, sir!
