Actually beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I see a nice clean uncluttered locomotive. As an 0-6-0 she is a yard switcher anyways. Nice front deck for a man to ride on and hold on to the hand irons. Minimal plumbing hanging out in the weather.

That's quite a contrast in appearances between the locomotive on the turn table and the locomotive to the rear on the left. I'm sure appearances weren't a consideration when the Q1 was built during WWII. Thanks for sharing.

Not a yard switcher. No one ever rode on the front deck. The Q1 is a main line heavy haul freight locomotive which had BR power classification of 5F. The class was designed by Oliver Bulleid for use on the intensive freight turns experienced during wartime on the Southern Railway network. It was designed to use a minimum amount of available materials during wartime. A total of 40 locomotives were built. They were so successful they survived almost to the end of steam, the last one not being withdrawn until 1966.
