Gorgeous, both locomotive and the scene itself. 'Shame they didn't have a single passenger car or two in tow. Curious - Why dies it appear that older tunnel is the active tunnel with the newer tunnel appearing abandoned?

It's an optic illusion only that there are no rails in the tunnel on the right. There is even a little signal, called dwarf signal, which shows a light from the back, that indicates that there is a train leaving the tunnel in short time. In Switzerland, there is left hand running on double tracks usually, so the steam locomotive is running on the "false" track (where trains are circulating in direction Italy usually).
