What’s a car knocker?

"Car knocker" was a slang term for the yard/terminal guys who assisted with coupling and uncoupling equipment, working the coupler levers and connecting air and steam hoses. At Grand Central, this involved jumping down onto the tracks between the high level platforms where they could not be easily seen by FL9 engineers, so to communicate they'd bang on the nose.
