This train probably more than any personifies how the USRA didn't actually want any real competition for Conrail; if they wanted competition, this train would have been based out of Croxton and the D&H provided with trackage rights straight from NJ to Buffalo and its western connection (N&W). The ludicrous route this train had to follow, going west to Allentown, then north to Scranton, then bactracking northEAST to Binghamton, THEN (finally) west towards Buffalo, and the resulting third-morning delivery (as compared with Conrail's second-morning delivery), meant that Conrail basically got all the traffic anyone cared about, aside from a little cherry-picking at the end of the week when the weekend allowed the slower service to still be sufficient for Monday deliveries.
