Ironically I heard those problems were caused by a modification (removing one of their two driveshafts) to reduce their weight to get around some archaic "weight on drivers" work rule. SMH!

I BELIEVE you are quite right about that. They were never designed to only operate with one shaft. It all had to due with crew pay. A CLASSIC case of being "penny wise and pound foolish".
