I seriously doubt either of these trains were doing 180. I believe the fastest speed limit on any part of the NEC is 150 and old bridges like these tend to have big speed restrictions.

Patrick: Thanks for the comment. The bridge is restricted to 90 mph; two trains approaching each other at 90 mph produce a "closing speed" of 180 mph.
