I wonder why Amtrak didn't keep the transition cars which started with the Santa Fe. I took a trip west in 1977 from Cleveland to LA, CA and the transition cars were present then. But in 1977 F40s were used over the pass with three up front.

Hi Dale. To answer your question about the hi-level transition cars. They were approaching the end of their useful lives. Amtrak replaced them with the Superliner II Transition Sleepers, one of which you can see in this photo. I miss those cars too!
