Two of these units pulled our RR Historical Chapter Fall trip from Norfolk to Lynchburg and return in October of 1983. When the ferry trip pulled into Norfolk, a large plume of steam erupted from the 611 which look strangely odd. The crown sheet had cracked and could not be repaired for the trip. Needless to say there were some unhappy rail fans the morning of the trip. Some decided not to go. If I remember correctly, this was a test paint scheme for the then new NS. They were probable some of the first units to be painted in the final NS paint.
