I’ve always liked RDCs. I think their failure to very very widespread is tied to the very thing that was supposed to be their strength, marketing wise. They were dismal at pulling trading cars, although many railroads tried. Railroads had lots of extra passenger cars sitting around, why would they want to buy a whole new powered unit just to add extra capacity for an occasional Boy Scout trip or whatever. Notable the South, where a sturdier unit might have done well, eschewed them altogether.
