What is Kaolin?

It's a kind of white powdery clay that's used in everything from antacids, to cosmetics. Typically, it's shipped in a slurry form, basically suspended in water. The hopper cars you see here, aren't for major interchange, and tend to be for inter plant movements; while the tank cars carry the clay itself. That clay is very heavy, so it limits the transport to shorter 40 and 50 foot cars.
