That is indeed a really fascinating story and such an interesting looking loco. It doesn't quite have the style of the class A4's though.

I'd like to add that the experiment was for the most part considered a failure. The trials were run with streamlined passenger couches that were mostly used on international trains. With non-streamlined couches the reduction in coal consumption was negligible. A number of series of streamlined diesel and electric trainsets were introduced from 1934 onward (mat'34, mat'35, mat'36, mat'37, mat'40). Had WWII not happened, NS probably would have phased out steam in the early fifties. As it happened, a 3700 clas locomotive pulled the last official steam-powered train on 7 januari 1958.
