Looks like the train is headed away from the Union Station and more like the other direction.

This consist is traveling south from Metrolink's maintenance facility (out of picture to the left) down the river toward Union Station. Once there, the two trains will be disconnected and be prepared for their respective trips out of LAUS as part of the evening's rush hour commuter service.

Having grown up a stones trough away from the location I immediately recognized the location. That said I made my comment base on the loco being to the left. Did the train backup or was there another power unit at the other end?

That is correct, this train (well, two of them technically) was operating in "push" operation with the locomotives shoving the train south with the engineer sitting in a 'cab car' in control of the train on the other end.
