The ties of the two tracks nearest the camera look odd to me. Does anyone have an explanation for their appearance?

They look as if they are made of old rails. If you look carefully at their ends you will see what I mean.

Ian, you really captured a moment that any railfan can relate to. Being track side watching and waiting for the train, dreaming of an invite into the cab, or maybe the caboose. Oh, the days of old with no graffiti.
