Why were crews evacuated by emergency personnel? Were they in danger? It looks as if the crews could easily walk out of the cab through the rear door.

Not sure, just what was in a newspaper account. The rescue seems to be getting them out of the area rather than from the cab, not sure where the nearest plowed road was at that time. Also the area has been excavated as this is several days later. Roads were very drifted in. Even on this day some roads were not passable and the Iowa website at the time had showed many roads closed.
