At the time, the Santa Fe held the GM contracts to haul autos in the Chicago-California corridor, and was buying all GE locomotives for quite a while. GM was complaining about the fact that trainloads of GM autos were being pulled by GE, as opposed to GM subsidiary EMD, locomotives, and ultimately got somebody on Santa Fe's board of directors which, in combination with the coming merger with EMD-phile BN, resulted in the purchase of the SD75Ms. In the meantime, the Santa Fe had the perfect answer to GM's complaints about GE diesels hauling trainloads of GM's cars - they assigned sets of older SD40-2s to the auto trains, like the set seen here.
