A photo spot that has rarely if ever been taken. This is a portion of what is left of Hill's railroad, the Great Northern. The train has just come off the short but steep grade out of what's left of Hillyard, GN's former freight yard. After the BN merger, the NP lines and yard were made the favorable mainline route, relegating the GN main from here to Colbert, WA to local traffic. (The line to Kettle Falls turned off at Colbert.) The rest of the GN main was abandoned from Colbert to Newport in 1983. All of the GN alignment west of here to a few miles out of town was abandoned when the 1974 World Fair took up some of the real estate downtown. A new alignment was built and bridge connecting the old GN to the NP at west edge of Spokane. UP also gave up real estate for Expo '74 and uses NP track to near this area where they enter their own track. Thank you for sharing this rarely photographed location.
