Yep, term goes back many years and is a reference to helper engine(s) coupled ahead of the road power, as opposed to on the rear-end of a train, as explained to me by old school PRR men. I have seen the term used interchangeably with "helpers" and it may not even be in vogue nowadays, however, it is generally a reference to power coupled ahead of the haulers as was often done with passengers trains to aid the K4s on mountain grades, or on mail or other priority trains to expedite them.
