Take a 2' long piece of string, place it on a flat surface in an arc as the curve is, place a heavy object at one end of the piece of string, that is the rear of your train, now take your fore finger and thumb at the other end of the piece of string, that is your engines, now pull. Physics 101

A classic example of a string line derailment. Should have put the 11 empties at the rear.

Precision Railroading at its finest. I don't know why NS would try to run a 150 car freight up a mountain grade without helpers. Nonetheless putting empty cars up front. Imagine if Amtrak was passing by on the other track.

It appears that there were several major mistakes here!

They weren't mistakes, but a series of careless acts brought on by Precision Railroading. Trying to haul a 150 car freight up a mountain without helpers is dumb enough, but putting empty cars up front, is just outright dangerous. Wrecks like these will continue to happen unless PSR is thrown in the trash can where I it belongs.
