Why would they be scrapped when railfans would buy them? I feel sure they would sell for more than what a scrapper would pay for them.

It seems railroads just want to get rid of it the easiest way. When St. Maries River RR was sold by Potlatch Lumber Mill and the Clarkia Logger was discontinued, the new owner of the railroad quickly sent all the historic log bunks that were built in the Milwaukee Road shops to the scrapper. An effort was made to save a few for the museum in Potlatch, ID. They really had to twist the owner's arm to relinquish just one at the price of about $2000, which was the approximate price the scrapper was paying for one car. I do understand the money aspect, but out of upward of 250-500 log bunks, one would think 3 or 5 of those cars wouldn't matter. There were at least 4 or 5 variations of those home built cars. Along this same line of talk, considering the thousands of mile of Milwaukee track that was ripped up after their bankruptcy and eventual sale, it would have been nice to have gotten a hold of one or two of those unique Milwaukee Road red & white chevron target switch stands. But they all seem to rush it to the scrapper before a railfan or museum can obtain it.
