Was the station originally 'stub end' with trains backing in?

Yes, this station was a stub-end terminal. It is hard to tell but the mainline goes under an overpass behind the apartments that are behind the terminal. The wye for the terminal is located in the space above the apartments. It is still in place in order to serve Pilgrim's Pride (the long tan building left of the station).

There seemed to be a 'standard' in the early 20th Century - that if you were a 'large' city and built a station that trains must 'back in' and have the locomotives away from the head house of the station. Washington DC, Savannah, Jacksonville among others were all constructed in such a manner.
