This image recalls a very sad but interesting article which appeared in the magazine "Keystone" some number of years ago. At the close of WWII the Army engaged in a massive project to return the caskets of Army personnel killed in action in Europe to the US for burial, if their families requested it. The caskets were brought by ship to the Brooklyn Army Terminal, then loaded into specially modified former heavyweight Pullman cars which then transported the soldiers remains to the nearest open station for burial in their home towns. Period photos show that somber activity occurring in the exact location where these cars currently sit. It is almost as if they represent a memorial to those times and fallen heroes.
