That practice may even go back as far as the early 1980's during the BN days. I went to a little private school in Edwall, WA from 1984 thru the spring of 1988. The school sat on a hill so you could easily see the tracks. It seemed like all you ever saw were intermodal trains. Every so often I caught a view of the daily manifest. The only exception was in the fall when the grain trains were moving. Most of those went down the Columbia gorge but some made their way on the old GN.
