I'm really surprised at the lack of use of tie plates. I would guess this was originally done for reasons of "economy", but it would seem that building track this way would cause the ties to wear out faster.

Perhaps the equipment is light enough in weight that plates just aren't needed. Those rails look quite sizable for this narrow gauge application and the base of the rail is pretty wide to handle the weight.
