Shame one of these could not be preserved.

The cab design here looks strikingly similar to the front of the New Haven's RDC cab units. Is there any relation?

Those RDC cab units and the entire 'Roger Williams' train is covered on pages 79, 80, and 81, of Donald Duke and Edmund Keilty's 1990 book RDC published by Golden West Books and no mention is made of the cab's styling philosophy or source of the design. Looks like someone who has other sources will have to be the one who can tell whether there is a connection. Right now, I'd call it a simple case of mixing form follows function with 1950s locomotive aesthetics.
