AMAZING structure, regrettably 2/3 of it appears to no longer be in use.

Yup, Rich. The two far set of tracks haven't been in use in decades. I've gone on that very bridge many times on Amtrak from Michigan. I've always wondered why they don't open up one of the others, given that there is so much traffic on that line.

There would HAVE to be a REAL NEED to additional track capacity, as not only would it require vast amounts of money, but the Federal Regulations regarding bridges over "Navigable Waters" can be insanely and frustratingly complex. I understand that basically ALL Amtrak and most freight moving east from Chicago HAS to go through this 2-track "chokepoint."

It might be worth the expenditure. I have waited on the eastern end of this "chokepoint" numerous times. If there are boats passing, there can be a handful of trains waiting, have 4 tracks instead of two would make for far less delays.
