Pardon my ignorance, but what does a wash train do? (By the way, locomotive 011 is missing a tail light.)

Peter, the wash train sprays and clean the rails during the fall season. When the leaves fall, they create a slippery mess for commuter trains. Without the wash train, the commuter trains would be slipping and sliding when accelerating or decelerating.
