With no clear markings being visible, which end would have been designated the "front ? "

Quite similar in appearance to repowered RI RS2's and MKT RS3's

The long hood looks like a GP9. I love these old half and halfs. I'd like to own all of these beasts. I always wished somebody and reengined an Alco with a Sulzer engine.

I can't rightly remember but the Rock Island inherited either these units or the ones from MKT. It's possible they might have gone from Frisco to Katy to The Rock. I tried to do a history search on the modified Alcos the Rock Island acquired but I couldn't find anything. All I know is the Rock Island acquired them second hand.

Rock had five RS2m called 'Pelicans' but I believe they were all ex-RI units sent to EMD for rebuild. They were returned in the maroon livery with striping, sometime 1957-58.
