What would cause a rail to break and then bend like this?

I believe this rail was intentionally cut and bent to derail the train. There is not a conventional derailer or bumper so the track just ends at the next grade crossing.

The rail that is bent is spiked down, so it was done intentionally. The line behind the photographer is out of service for whatever reason.
