This is a minor, non-railroad point, but presumably the ship was RMS Queen Mary, the ocean liner. HMS Queen Mary was a Lion-class battlecruiser sunk at the Battle of Jutland (1916). RMS = Royal Mail Ship, a liner subsidized by the U.K. government that carried the Royal Mail. HMS = His Majesty’s Ship, generally a Royal Navy ship. For both of these ships, Queen Mary referred to Mary of Teck, wife of King George V.
