I've seen this done numerous times on the CN line that goes through the town I live in. It's cool watching them bang the track back together, and hearing the cracking of tracks at times.

James, I don’t recall if the rest of the main through here was welded rail or not, but the break was at a regular rail joint, probably due to being near the grade crossing.

Judging by the length of the track being heated, I'm going to assume that it's continuous welded rail. I've seen them do it a few times here. Most of the track where I live is welded, with a couple spots that weren't a while back. When they worked on the continuous welded rail, the flames were this long. But, when they worked on jointed rail, it was much shorter flame.
