This story is similar to what happened to the station in my hometown, Oceanside, NY, after a fire in 1958 destroyed it. The Long Island Rail Road, then a ward of the Pennsylvania, built as its replacement a small building with just a ticket office and waiting area enclosed on only three sides. It was awful and poorly maintained. In 2002 the railroad finally put up an adequate station with a waiting room and public rest room. Half the space, though, was for a ticket office that closed a few years later due to automation.
