Brian, not only were they a total flop due to the mechanical issues, as you pointed out with the aluminum wiring, but they were cosmetically unappealing as well... as clearly evidenced from the photo. :-) That is a face even a mother couldn't love! I have no idea what GE was thinking when they came up with these units? Maybe they hired someone from Baldwin to design these locomotives - and I mean the entire "U" series of them.

It's amazing, how forgiving, a railroad like UP, can be towards a builder who constructed junk. The same railroad, today, is buying GE wide cabs at alarming rates. Did they ever get their money back from the builder for this junk. The earlier U50's, were much better.

I liked the look of the U50 , but the altered look of the U50C didn't cut it for me . The Gap between Cab and Pilot got closed up , and the radiators moved to the center looked odd , due to engine placement and going to C C Trucks versus the cool looking B+B B+B Trucks of the U50
