Mileposts? The line is less than 15 miles long from St. George to Tottenville. I don't know what all those numbers are supposed to signify, but they don't look like mileposts.

Yeah, you're right; stationing signs would be the correct term. Those signs signify the distance in feet to the zero point, in this case the end of the line at Tottenville, and are used similarly to mileposts in that they help crews precisely identify where they are on the line or note where track defects are. So that first sign states that on Track S2, that point is Station 568+64.0, which is 56,864' from the end of the track.
