Such a shame NS spun off their branch lines. I had the privilege to get to experience activity on the "R Line" that ran from Columbus, GA to Durand at the GP lumber mill. That branch line was in really good shape toward the end. I remember trains would speed thru Pine Mountain at about 40mph. I even got to see some Conrail units after the merger. But, as was common for the day, NS spun it off tho Georgia Southwestern some time around 2003 maybe 2004. Apparently the meager lumber traffic was insufficient to make a profit so the line was removed all the way back to North Columbus around 2007. I really miss that unique operation.
