If it's got an amtrak number, but no lettering, it's likely only been a few weeks since Amtrak got the engine.

In my experience, when Amtrak purchased a used locomotive, it was given an Amtrak number before going into service. At the same time gray patches were painted under the cab windows (with 'Amtrak' stenciled in blue) and at rear of body (with road number in blue). 275 is the only unit I recall (on Floridian, at least) with white road numbers (w/o gray patches) and no Amtrak markings. I would not be surprised if there were others, but my point in the caption was that it was not SOP.

I looked through RP shots of early Amtrak, and it seems the ex-PC units were done with the white numbers at rear (they just cleaned a little spot before painting, rather than doing a gray rectangle) and no Amtrak markings. Looks like SCL, C&O, B&O, RF&P, UP... all had 'Amtrak' under cab windows and most had a gray rectangle for the blue road number. I saw early Floridians with Es probably 50-75 times, and only saw PC power twice.
