Nice shot that brings back great memories. The 1218's N&W hooter with 300 psi steam pressure behind it had to be the most ear-splitting whistle that I've ever heard. Other engines in recent history have had hooters mounted at times (NW 475, CO 614, etc.) but the sound just isn't the same at lower steam pressures.

Yes, the 1218's whistle will certainly make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. I like the latest air horns on the newest diesels for the same reason. There are some who think they're excessive, but I don't think so - you really need something that will rouse the "texting behind the wheel with the music thumping" crowd from their slumber and pay attention!
