CSX often placed their slugs as leaders since there was no noise to contend with. The other units were called Mothers as they provided the power to their own unit and to the slug. I don't think CSX has them any longer. According to some railroaders the GP40 mothers had plenty of power for both Mother and slug, and would lug long trains up grades on less fuel. Speed was never considered but fuel savings was a plus.

Yes, if I'm not mistaken most NS RP-E4C units are mated with GP40-2 mothers, but can be lead locomotives if necessary.
