I've often wondered about the arrangement for accessing the equipment in the long hood. With the car body girders located in the "bicycle chainguard" enclosures along the sides it must have been cramped. The nose would not have not been much better. Note the boiler water tank and steam hose connection below the coupler. The train heating boiler was in the nose with the exhaust passing through a duct between the windshields. All this was straightened out when EMD's Chief Engineer Dick Dilworth replaced this "Branch Line" design with the GP7.
