Here in the States railroads had rods that went out from the towers. Latched to Armstrong Levers that controlled the rods. Later I saw how this was all arranged below the two story tower. A series of connections that snapped into place and sent out a electrical signal to switches and signals. Called Interlocking towers as the individual levers received an electrical signal back from the devise it controlled, such as a switch. And after hearing each snap into place with a click the towerman would throw another another lever to control the signal.

Another thought. I wonder if these were spring loaded as one cable controlled a point and the other cable pulled it back to normal. Interesting concept.
