The black streaks on the side of the hood may be an indicator of oil slipping past worn piston rings. I hope somebody preserves one of these before they all disappear. Not the prettiest piece of equipment but a definite mark of ingenuity by the ATSF Cleburne shops mechanics to convert the unfortunate visibility issues of the F7 to a practical hood unit good for switching.

Wish I'd done a little research before making the above comment. Looks like some preservation being done and possibly still a few still taking charge on various short lines...

Thank you for the comment, SES. The Kentucky Railway Museum has preserved and operates CF7 2546 in full Santa Fe colors. Not exactly the spot you'd expect to find that one, but at least one example is saved already. You can find information on their preserved equipment at https://www.kyrail.org/equipment/
