What an odd configuration for the exhaust stack! I'm curious as to how the draft works in this machine.

This locomotive is equipped with a Franco-Crosti boiler, which redirects the locomotive exhaust underneath the boiler to recapture as much waste heat as possible. Several classes of steam locomotive (mainly from Italy and Germany) used this system, and they are easily identified by this unusual smokestack placement.
